Open64 4.0 version is released

Category: Developer News, General News

By: Shin-Ming Liu

Hi all,

After roughly 5 months of effort, the new release is posted on www.open64.net. We made the presentation in PLDI 2007 (slides).  The time is compressed.  Therefore, we just presented one slide.  The complete slide set could be found in the website.  Although we stated the new release is for compiler research, it is perfectly suitable for commercial use now.  In the website, we include the x86 port.  This allows Google to actively participate in the development effort.  Besides Google, other companies will join the effort soon.

A few key elements in this release:

  • Supports Itanium AND x86 family on Linux
    • Three languages: C,C++,Fortran95
    • GCC4.x source and ABI compatible
    • Fortran95 suitable for HPC market
    • Industrial Strength
  • www.open64.net hosts SVN, Bugzilla, Release, and Documentation
    • cooperative development model for best leverage
    • Downloadable binary and source packages
  • Open64 Steering Group to coordinate open64 architectural evolution
    • Members from Industry and Universities

Call for your participation:

The Open64 could be the compiler of choice.  I strongly encourage you to join this GCC style development model such that we all benefit from each other, regardless if you are doing it for commercial use or for research purpose.  With the x86 family support in this release, you could turn your PC or laptop into a development station for Open64, and enjoy the compiler writing whereever you go.

The project, Osprey, is funded by HP with joint effort from University of Delaware, Tsinghua University, and China Academy of Science.  Without the effort lead by Fred from Qlogic(Pathscale), this release would not be possible.
